Need facts to support your belief that physical education improves academic performance? A 2002 study by the California Department of Education showed a direct relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement between fifth, seventh and ninth graders. Students who met minimum fitness levels in three or more fitness areas showed the highest gains in academic achievement. The study demonstrated a positive relationship between physical fitness and math and reading scores, with the tie between math and physical fitness being the stronger.
