Dr. June P. Galloway
The June P. Galloway Scholarship was established in her memory in 1974, for a undergraduate student major in the areas of Health and Human Performance.

Dr. Galloway, a native of Easley, S.C. received her B.S. degree from the University of Georgia and master's degree and doctorate in education from UNCG. She joined the UNCG faculty in 1957 and died in March 1974 after a short illness. While at UNCG, Dr. Galloway served as coordinator for student teaching, coordinator of the athletic division and was one of the first coaches for women's basketball. She directed the Center for Innovation in Secondary School Physical Education at Smith High School and the UNCG summer day camp for a number of years. Professional leadership responsibilities included president of the NCAAHPERD and of the Southern Association of Physical Education for Women. The 1974 President of SAPECW, when announcing Dr. Galloway's death wrote: "June's entire life (May 5, 1932) is one of example for the best we have in the profession. The inner values of this person serve as an outstanding heritage to any student, colleague, or friend. Few people pass our way during a life time that mean so much to so many.
Nathan Taylor Dodson
Taylor Dodson was born in 1922 and grew up on a farm in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He died in 1969 as a result of a heart condition. As an adult, he lived with knowledge of his heart impairment, but shared it only with his family and a few close friends.

Dodson's contributions in the field of physical education can be grouped into five main areas: 1. his work as advisor in physical education for the State Department of Public Instruction of North Carolina; 2. his work as Professor of Physical Education and Intramural Director for Men at Wake Forest University; 3. his work as a sports official; 4. in summer camps; 5. and in professional organizations.

During the years 1950-1957, Dodson was with the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction, gaining the deepest respect of his associates, working ceaselessly for improved programs in physical education for all children. During his remaining years as intramural director at Wake Forest, his work was exemplary. Marjorie Crisp, Director of Physical Education for Women at Wake Forest, wrote that "one will never know the principles of correct moral character that were outcomes of his leadership upon the hundreds of young men on this campus." Dodson was a wise and skilled certified official in football basketball, baseball, and wrestling. Summer camp work was an integral phase of Dodson's professional life. A close friend noted that: Taylor knew well how to live in and with the wilderness. He taught the hidden magic of the trees and flowers, the tricky currents of swift rivers, the sweet taste of spring water, the vast green of rolling mountains and the intricate structures of the individual leaves. The work, which Dodson did in summer camps and in local, regional, and national physical education organizations, was a perfect example of his blending theory and practice.

Dodson made Phi Beta Kappa, contributed 49 published articles, and served at various times on 33 professional organizations. But he never forgot that physical education is mainly action in the form of games, sports, camping, and dance. Barbara Forker, current president of AAHPER, did notice that N. T. Dodson was a man in a hurry, "but now we realize why . . . His consideration was always for the membership, for those we serve. He gave of himself completely . . ." J. Edmund Welch, West Virginia Institute of Technology
Ronald W. Hyatt Graduate Scholarship
Dr. Ronald W. Hyatt, professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS), has served UNC Chapel Hill with distinction for over 40 years. A native of Latta, S. C., Dr. Hyatt earned degrees from Furman University (BS), and UNC-Chapel Hill (MA and PhD). Prior to coming to Chapel Hill in 1966, he coached, taught and directed intramural programs at the high school and collegiate levels in both South Carolina and North Carolina. Dr. Hyatt became the intramural sports director and assistant professor of physical education at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1966, and began touching the lives of thousands of Carolina students.

"Doc Hyatt" served two terms as president of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education and Dance, and one term as president of the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance. Nine different organizations presented him with over 25 different honors and awards. He is currently writing a documentary on the History of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (formerly "Physical Education"). Dr. Hyatt led commencement and University Day events as UNC-CH's Faculty Marshal from 1993 to 2003, and he currently serves as Director of The Program for Public Policy in Sport at UNC-Chapel Hill. His professional areas of interest are many and include: professional preparation in teacher education, history of physical education and sport, the literature of sport, and the history of the Olympics. His keen interest in and historical knowledge of physical education and sport is substantial and recognized by many, as well as his poetry. He is most proud of the fact that during his career he taught students at all levels from elementary school through the collegiate level. His honors are numerous and prestigious. They include over the C. Knox Massey Award for Distinguished Service from UNC, the EXSS Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the "Carolina Priceless Gem" award from the UNC Athletic Department, in 2000, 2002, and 2005, respectively.
