NCAAHPERD 2004 National Award Winners
At the 2004 AAHPERD/SDAAHPERD combined National convention, 8 NCAAHPERD members were recipients of National and District Awards. Our National Award Recipients were:
 
National K-12 Dance Educator of the Year, Cynthia M. Hoban

Cynthia M. HobanThe National Dance Association (NDA) recently announced Cynthia M. Hoban as the K-12 Dance Educator of the Year. NDA awards this title annually to an educator who demonstrates creative teaching methods through a balanced curriculum of cultural understanding, academics, and physical activity. The educator is a role model for students and professionals alike.

Cindy Hoban has shared her passion for dance by teaching for over 25 years. She is currently the Dance Educator and Arts Department Chair at Moore Square Museum Magnet Middle School (M2M3) in Raleigh, North Carolina. Upon receiving the DEOY title at the AAHPERD National Convention in New Orleans, Cindy Hoban noted, "I am so happy about this award. I am especially proud to represent NCAAHPERD, NDA and AAHPERD!"

AAHPERD Honor Award, John P. Bennett
John P. BennettJohn Bennett is an associate professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. As a former director of healthful living education for the state of North Carolina and a lifelong educator, he makes important contributions to the health and well being of individuals of all ages, from kindergarten to senior citizens. John's contributions have been widely recognized in North Carolina where he has received the North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Channing Mann Award Winner, Artie Kamiya
Artie Kamiya has been awarded the 2004 for National Physical Education Administrator of the Year. This is the highest recognition bestowed by the Council for School Leadership in Physical Education. The award honors those individuals who have dedicated themselves to excellence as administrators or supervisors, in contributions to their profession, and in service to the mission of CSLPE. These individuals exemplify the highest standards in accomplishment and innovation, in strong and vigorous leadership and in significant scholarship within the field.
Professional Service Award, Bob Blackburn

The AAHE Professional Service to Health Education Award is presented annually to recognize association members who have made substantial contributions to the association and the profession for ten (10) years or more.

Dr. Blackburn was also elected a "Fellow" of the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance. The Society was established in 1999 from within the allied professions of health, physical education, recreation, sport and dance in the United States and currently has sixty-seven (67) members. Blackburn is the first member of the North Carolina Alliance to be inducted in this national group. He was presented with the "Fellow" medallion of membership at the annual meeting of AAHPERD in New Orleans in April.

Southern District Athletic Director of the Year, Bobby Guthrie
Bobby is the Wake County School Public School System Senior Administrator for Athletics. This award recognizes outstanding and consistent service to the field of Athletics and is given by the National Council for Secondary School Athletic Directors (NCSSAD). The council names six district winners across the U.S. and were recognized at the NASPE Hall of Fame Banquet.
Southern District Middle School Physical Educator of the Year, Judith DeWalt
Judy has been a physical and hea1th educator in the Charlotte area for the past seventeen years, and this year is her first year at Jay M. Robinson Middle School in Charlotte, where she is the department chair. She came to Robinson Middle from South Charlotte Middle, where she taught for ten years. Judy is an extremely dedicated professional in the field of physical education. Her enthusiasm and commitment to quality physical education will serve her and her students. The Southern District represents a 13-state area from Virginia to Texas. The Southern District Physical Educator of the Year Award is given in recognition of outstanding teaching performance at the middle school level and the ability to motivate today's youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity.
Southern District Dance University Teacher of the Year, Marsha Lester
With teaching and service as a primary focus, Marsha has made over 60 presentations at professional conferences, workshops, and AAHPERD conventions. She has served on numerous professional committees such as the North Carolina Clogging Council, SDAAHPERD Public Relations, NC Olympic Festival, and currently serves on the NCAAHPERD DANCE board as Recreational Dance Coordinator. Her passion for teaching and performing was fulfilled when she formed the NCSU Wolfpack Clogging Team that has given over 240 state, national, and international performances.
Southern District Recreator of the Year, Russ McHenry
Russ McHenry has been a health and physical education teacher at Kiser Middle School in Greensboro, NC since 1989. Since that time he has developed a wonderful intramural program that has brought the whole school together. Every child is valued and Russ instills a positive self-image, fair play and team spirit. He has designed creative and cooperative games that let every child experience success. All students from the special needs to the top athletes feel the same sense of accomplishment, self-worth and pride in themselves and school. Russ's principal states that Russ is always positive, enthusiastic, a team player, concerned about the welfare of his students, and willing to put forth an extra effort to insure the success of all students.
